What is Heart Disease?
Heart Disease, also known as cardiovascular disease, is America’s leading cause of death. Heart Disease includes all diseases that affect the heart including, heart attack, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, congenital heart disease and others. While the symptoms of heart disease vary by the type and severity of your heart condition, discomfort, pressure, heaviness, pain or aching in the chest, arm or below the breastbone is a common symptom. Shortness of breathe, dizziness, weakness and fatigue are among the other symptoms that someone with heart disease may experience.
What should the Caregiver do?
When caring for a person with heart disease it is important to promote a healthy lifestyle: taking medications, exercising, eating well, reducing risk factors like smoking, etc. Know the names, dosages and side effects of the medication your loved one is prescribed and help them remember to take the correct dose at the correct time. The variety of drugs taken for heart disease can cause a range of side effects from dizziness to dehydration. Help your loved on be on the look out for these symptoms and seek medical attention when necessary. Caregiving can be stressful and overwhelming. It is important to take care of yourself. Ask for and accept help when you need it.
